Who has Heart + Sole?

Four years ago, 2011 Henderson High School Seniors Steve Jordan and Drew Kelly started a run in memory of a friend's mother who lost her fight with stomach cancer. In 2012, senior Dominic Smith continued the run. He was joined by the daughter-in-laws of Josephine Gatto - Megan and Felicia - as they honored the matriarch of their family. This year, Megan and Felicia are joined by Henderson Seniors, Luigi Capriotti and Kyle DeMarino.

While the race was started as a tribute to one person's memory, the race has become a collection of teams and individuals each running for their own reason. There will be friends and family members celebrating victory over cancer. Others will be encouraging their loved ones in the fight of their life. For those that have lost their battle with cancer, we remember. And for some, the Heart + Sole is a milestone - a personal goal - in their commitment to good health. And for all of us, it's a great way to kick off Cancer Awareness Month and give back to patients living with cancer in our community.

The Heart + Sole 5K benefits The Cancer Program of Chester County Hospital, which combines cutting-edge treatment and technology, patient programs and a caring staff to give every patient the edge in their battle with cancer.

This year's Heart & Sole Race is dedicated to the memories of Josephine Gatto and Fatiha Khattabi.

Meet a Few of the Teams

Josephine GattoTEAM GATTO: Josephine Gatto lived a life focused on her family, friends and community. Although Josephine lost her battle with small cell lung cancer in November 2010, it was her desire to help others - especially women - in their fight by supporting The Cancer Program of The Chester County Hospital.

Donations to the Hospital are used to support patient programs like anti-nausea medication assistance, transportation assistance, funding for follow up care for patients who have no insurance who have undergone one of our free breast or skin cancer screenings, reimbursement for massage therapy sessions, and the Living With Cancer Program, which offers financial assistance for patients to pay a home bill, to buy a wig or to pay directly for a service which the patient needs, the Coping with Cancer Together program and cutting edge technology.

TEAM KHATTABI: Fatiha Khattabi, the caring mother of three, lost the difficult battle to stomach cancer at age 35 after months of treatment and therapy. Fatiha worked all her life to provide her children with the best education and inspired many others to pursue their dreams. She was very generous to her friends and family and was often seen volunteering in her community and at her local mosque. It would be an honor for her to bring the community together in support of the fight against cancer while enjoying the beautiful weather. It would mean everything to her to see the smiles as people overcome their hurdles, because to her, nothing was impossible.

Event T-Shirts
Additional Heart + Sole T-Shirts, designed by Henderson High School students, are available for $10 each.
